  • Understanding the Connection Between COVID-19 and Oral Health
corona virus

Growing up, we are all taught the importance of maintaining oral hygiene through daily brushing and flossing. However, one may not realize just how much of an impact oral hygiene has on our overall health. Amid a global pandemic, staying healthy and strong is more important than ever before.

It may come as a surprise to find out that oral health conditions such as gum disease have been linked to stroke, heart disease, and more. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene does not only help prevent these diseases but it also has been linked to preventing serious complications associated with COVID-19. Read on to learn how maintaining excellent oral health lowers your risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common form of dental disease that affects the gum tissue and bones surrounding your teeth. Gum disease differs from tooth decay in that it erodes the bones that support the roots of the teeth, whereas tooth decay causes holes in the teeth themselves. Gum disease is very common, affecting up to 90% of the population, and is primarily caused by failure to maintain a good oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing each day and visiting a dentist near you regularly for a professional dental cleaning and checkup.

The Link Between Gum Disease and COVID-19 Complications

In a new international study brought forward by McGill researchers, infected and inflamed gums were found to be linked to a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19. Their research indicated that patients with COVID-19 that also have gum disease are up to three and half times more likely to be admitted to the ICU and four and half times more likely to be hooked up to a ventilator.

Another study published in the British Dental Journal also discovered a connection between severe COVID-19 outcomes and poor oral health. In this study, the research team questioned whether there could be a connection between a concept called “bacterial load” and COVID-19. Essentially, they worked to determine if higher levels of bacteria in the mouth could be associated with COVID-19 complications. Dentists already know that gum disease is linked to an increased risk of infections in the body, mainly: heart, lung, and airway infections. The findings of the study published by British researchers line up with this understanding. They found that poor oral hygiene leads to higher inter-bacterial exchanges between the lungs and mouth, increasing the chances of respiratory infections. Based on these findings, researchers recommended that individuals maintain and prioritize excellent oral hygiene during COVID-19 infection to minimize their risk of developing complications.

How to Maintain Oral Health at Home

With the stress of the pandemic, it can be tough to maintain good daily habits, but it is essential that you work to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine. You should continue to maintain a well-balanced diet abundant in fruits and vegetables and low in sugary foods and beverages. Additionally, ensure that you:

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes each morning and evening
  • Floss each night
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash each day

It would be best if you also made time to visit your dentist for a dental cleaning and exam at least once every six months.
