  • Tooth Replacement: Reasons to Consider Dental Implants

Have you lost teeth due to accident, injury, genetics or other factors? There are many types of dental restorations offered by a Calgary dental clinic to replace missing teeth. However, compared to dental bridges and dentures, dental implants are a superior option. If you’re on the fence about receiving dental implants, keep reading this post to learn how they can improve your oral health and overall wellness!

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement. They are typically made from a biocompatible material and are surgically placed into your jawbone. Through a process called osseointegration, your body will accept the implant as your new tooth. This process helps make the implants feel and function very much like your natural teeth.

So, Why Should You Consider Implants?

Durability

There are other quicker alternatives to receiving implants. However, they are nowhere as comfortable as implants and will not last quite as long. Dental implants are very strong and durable. With proper care, dental implants will last for decades.

Improvement in Oral Health

It’s important to replace missing teeth to prevent oral health problems from occurring. When you replace your missing teeth, you prevent bacteria from building up in the gaps.

Comfort

Since implants fuse with your body, they feel very comfortable in your mouth. They are also firmly placed, so you won’t have to worry about your teeth falling or shifting like you would with dentures.

Preserve Your Jawbone

Without stimulation from your teeth, your jawbone will slowly begin to deteriorate. An implant will preserve your jawbone.

Prevents Teeth from Shifting

When there are gaps in your mouth, your remaining teeth will begin to shift to fill in the empty space. By receiving an implant, you can prevent your teeth from shifting and preserve your bite.

Easier to Eat

Compared to other restorations, implants are much stronger. Because of this, you can continue eating all of your favourite foods without any restrictions. You can include all nutritiously crunchy fruits and veggies as a part of your diet.

Maintenance

Since implants are very similar to your natural teeth in structure, they can be cared for in the same way! You do not have to make any adjustments to your brushing habits and can regularly visit your Calgary dentist for bi-annual checkups and cleanings.

The Process

If your tooth or teeth have not already fallen out, your Calgary dentist will begin the extraction process and prepare your mouth for the implant procedure. Bone grafting will be required if you do not have a sufficient amount of bone. After, your dentist will surgically place a titanium screw into your jawbone. It will take a few months for the screw to fuse with your body and heal. Once it has fused with your body, your dentist will permanently place your crown.

The Recovery

Like any other dental procedure, you can expect some mild pain and discomfort, however, the pain should quickly subside in a few days. It is recommended to take it easy for the first few days and to eat a soft foods diet until you feel comfortable eating. Remember to thoroughly brush and floss and to receive regular dental cleanings and checkups to maintain your implants and oral health.
