Canadian Dental Care Plan

What is the Canadian Dental CarePlan (CDCP)?

The CDCP is a government-funded program which provides financial support to eligible people and families to obtain necessary dental care. The whole purpose of the plan is to ease the financial cost of dental care, such that every Canadian, with or without an income, may have access to the needed dental care services that ensure oral health.

Starting in May 2024, the CDCP will help pay for different dental services, focusing on basic care and check-ups. This program makes dental visits more affordable for people who don’t have private insurance or can’t pay the full cost of dental treatments.

Key Benefits of the CDCP

  • Income-Based Coverage: The plan has a simple three-level payment system based on your family’s income, helping more Canadians afford dental care.
  • Family-Friendly: The CDCP covers different family members, including children and seniors, so everyone in your family can keep their teeth healthy.
  • Basic Dental Services: The program helps pay for important services like cleanings, check-ups, and basic treatments to keep your teeth in good shape.
  • Participating Dentists: Many dental clinics, including South Trail Crossing Dental, are part of the plan, making it easier for you to get affordable dental care.

Co-Payment Structure

The amount you pay for dental services under the CDCP depends on your family’s income. Here’s how it works:

  • If your yearly income is $70,000 or less, you don’t have to pay anything.
  • If your yearly income is between $70,001 and $79,999, you’ll pay 40%.
  • If your yearly income is between $80,000 and $89,999, you’ll pay 60%.

This government dental insurance plan helps make dental care affordable for families with different incomes.

How Does the CDCP Work?

  • Eligibility: To qualify for the CDCP, individuals and families must meet specific income criteria. The plan is available to all Canadian citizens, including children and seniors.
  • Application Process: You can apply for the CDCP through the official Canadian Dental Care Plan website. The site provides detailed information on the eligibility criteria, required documents, and how to apply for benefits.
  • Coverage: Once approved, eligible patients can receive the dental care they need at participating clinics like South Trail Crossing Dental, with reduced out-of-pocket costs based on their income.
  • Co-Payment: Depending on your family’s net income, you will pay a portion of the costs for dental services according to the co-payment structure outlined above.

What is the CDCP?

The CDCP is a federal government program that provides coverage to Canadian residents who do not have access to dental benefits and have a household income of less than $90,000 per year.

No. The CDCP covers part of the cost of your dental care. Depending on your income, you may have to pay a co-payment. Your dentist may also charge fees above what the CDCP covers, and you are responsible for that difference.

You are eligible if you are a Canadian resident who has filed a tax return, your adjusted family net income is under $90,000 per year, and you do not have dental insurance through an employer, pension plan, or private insurance policy. Seniors, children under 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate were the first groups to be enrolled, followed by all other eligible Canadians.

You are not eligible if you have dental coverage through your employer or a family member’s employer, a workplace health and wellness account, pension benefits, or a private dental insurance policy. This rule applies even if you never use the coverage or have to pay a premium for it. The only exception is if you are retired and opted out of pension dental benefits before December 11, 2023, and cannot opt back in.

Yes. You must renew your CDCP coverage annually. To renew for the 2026–2027 benefit year, you need to first file your 2025 tax return and receive your Notice of Assessment from the CRA, then complete your renewal at canada.ca/dental before June 1, 2026. If you miss this deadline, your coverage will end on June 30, 2026.

The CDCP covers a wide range of services including preventive care such as cleanings, check-ups, fluoride treatments, and sealants; diagnostic services like X-rays; restorative treatments including fillings and crowns; root canals; dentures; deep scaling for gum treatment; tooth extractions; and emergency dental services. Some complex services require preauthorization from your dentist before treatment can begin.
